In fact, I would give the opposite advice: Don't buy AppleCare. Good for OP but don't buy AppleCare thinking you'll never have to buy another computer. I didn’t mention anything about what I perceived as a solution, but they offered me a device replacement.

It was at this point that I called Apple to schedule another repair, and also let them know how frustrated I was that it had been over a month (due to shipping turn around times, plus repeat repair times) since I had had a function Mac (not counting all the repairs in 2019), and that I was pissed. They then fix the WiFi and Bluetooth, but return me a laptop with broken USB-C.

They fixed that, but literally broke the WiFi & Bluetooth in the process of fixing it. Then this year the USB-C stopped working again. They did a logic board (and various daughter board replacements). Then the USB-C ports fried out, as did the speakers. I ended up going back a couple of more times and they replaced the whole case. They did a top case replacement, but that didn’t fix it. The first round of issues were in 2019 when the case started making a creaking/clunking sound. I’ve heard others have had exchanges because of this so while it doesn’t bother me much most of the time I’m expecting to be able to use that to get it exchanged for a refurb late in the warranty period.I lost count. The sleep/wake button has an uneven feel about it where the bottom has next to no resistance while the top is stiff and clicky.

I bought my latest iPhone on the upgrade programme so it was bundled with AppleCare+ so I am covered for two years if I decide to finish paying it off. They said it was good will because they could see I looked after it, but I think it was partly because of the EU laws around minimum 2 year warranty that isn’t strongly enforced in the UK.Īnyway, consumer laws are complicated and companies like Apple tend to err on the side of caution. I had a screen replaced on a 6s Plus after 21 months because of discolouration that only became obvious after night shift was added. You can often get good companies like Apple to cover things under warranty after the first year, if you can prove a fault is because of bad workmanship or their negligence, but it’s a bit hit and miss. I live in the UK and it’s not 100% clear what happens after 1 year. So that's why Apple wants you to get AppleCare.

Lastly - Apple sold $7.25 BILLON dollars of AppleCare products in 2015 (the last statistic I could find.)Īpples services division which includes things like AppleCare and AppleMusic (and not its core hardware and software business) generated $20 BILLION in 2015. So perhaps I am due for one? Even if I were to have an incident and it cost say $800+ to fix, that is far less than the cost I would have spent over the 3 desktops, 5 laptops, 2 AppleTVs, 4 iPhones (that were bought before I started buying coverage for phones) and 5 iPods I have owned (Not mention all that other stuff I mentioned).

The most recent statistics I could find were that 11% (desktops) and 17% (laptops) of Apple owners need a repair of any kind. Additionally, I have always bought refurbished products (including the iPads and iPhones). Most importantly, I have never purchased Applecare for any of my laptops or desktops. I haven't gotten plans for the two iPads I have purchased (an iPad 2 and a Min-iPad 2nd gen) or the two AppleTVs, TimeMachine, Airport Express or any iPod. I also jumped in the pool with it on because I am a dork. (The last reason is why I now purchase plans for phones.)Īnd I did so for my Apple Watch party because it was new tech and mostly because it dangles on my wrist which makes it vulnerable to outside forces and my clumsy body movements. I have only recently begun purchasing plans for my phones because I have damaged them in the past and there are so many more ways to to do so - drops, water, coffee, the toilet. (Adding damage protection was not a big give as you still need to pay $69 fee per incident.) I assume this product reliability was affecting AppleCare sales - or maybe they just wanted more $ for the bottom line - and now Apple is creating artificial pressure for people to buy it. If you ask me this is proof positive that AppleCare+ is unnecessary for most and not purchasing is a gamble worth considering. When Apple added damage protection to AppleCare it changed the name to AppleCare+ and reduced the purchase-by date to 60 days. This poster probably bought their 2017 MacBook before the AppleCare+ announcement in June 2017 and was able to buy regular AppleCare within the 1 year period which was the original policy.
